We are very excited for our Pack’s first trip to southern Ohio to visit the Serpent Mound, an effigy mound (a mound in the shape of an animal) built by the ancient American Indian cultures representing a snake with a curled tail.  We are very lucky to have this internationally known National Historic Landmark right here in Ohio, and we hope to learn more about Native American and Ohio history.  To help us learn and understand, the Serpent Mound staff has agreed to put on some activities for the Pack.

After some games, demonstrations, and a tour, we will travel to the local Scout Council’s Campground — Camp Friedlander — and participate in that Council’s Cub-Scout friendly Spook-O-Ree, which will include trick or treating, costume wearing, hayrides, story-telling shows, games, crafts, a G-rate “haunted castle” and “haunted trail (when dark).”

We will spend the night in cabins.

We think this event is a great opportunity for family time, education, and fun.  Sibings can participate alongside their brother or sister Scouts, so feel free to bring them to share in the fun (but over three for the Spook-O-Ree).

The itinerary is as follows:

Saturday, October 19th

8:00 am – 1:00 pm – Drive (while eating lunch on the way) from Hudson to Serpent Mound (~3’48” without stopping) (Note: Ohio State plays on Friday in Illinois, so there shouldn’t be Ohio State traffic to contend with)

1:00 pm – 3:00 pm – Serpent Mound tour and programming

3:00 pm – ~5:00 pm – Drive to Dan Beard Council’s Camp Friedlander (~1’20” without stopping) (eating dinner on the way), unload car and set up in your cabin (part of Camp Friedlander’s Staff Village), have your Scout put his or her costume on, and drive a short distance (~5 minutes) on paved roads to the adjoining Cub World

~5:00 pm – ~10:00 pm – Participate in the Cub World’s Spook-O-Ree.  See also FB feed here.  Trick or treating, costume wearing, hayrides, story-telling shows, games, crafts, a G-rate “haunted castle” and “haunted trail (when dark).”  You don’t need to be there all night; when your Scout is funned out, you can go back to your cabin and go to bed.

Each paying youth Spook-O-Ree participant ($10) gets a packet that includes:
1 Coupon to Trick-or-Treat in the Fort
10 Tickets (for Midway games and Food Court Treats) (more tickets will be available for purchase)
1 Event Patch

Sunday, October 20th

7:00 am – Wake up, Clean up

In the morning, simply wake up, pack your gear, and clean your cabin.  Once done, feel free to start the 3’47” back to Hudson.  Breakfast (and coffee) are on your own.

Note that all meals on this trip are on your own, allowing you more flexibility with travel times.  Saturday lunch should be eaten before arriving at the Serpent Mound, and Saturday dinner should be consumed before arriving at Camp Friedlander.  Saturday breakfast (and coffee) are on your own after you break camp and clean your cabin.

As with all cabin excursions, there are only a set amount of bunks available, so, if you want to ensure your family’s participation, please register early.  Registration will close on October 14th.

The cost is $23 per child participating in the Spook-O-Ree (above 3-years old, please) and $13 per non-Spook-O-Ree participant (adults).  These costs covers cabin accommodations and the $10 admittance fee per child for the Spook-O-Ree.  Our cabins have either four or six bunks in a room.  We will do our best to place families in a room together, but we may need to have gender-specific cabins or rooms.  We will let you know your cabin assignment once registration is complete.

Also note that each car will need to pay $8 to park at the Serpent Mound (payable on arrival to the site administrators; not to the Pack).

As this is a cabin campout, no need to bring a tent.  But do bring a sleeping bag and pillow (and ear plugs, in case you share a cabin with a snorer), as well as your Scout’s Halloween Costume.

If you plan to attend, please join this event’s GroupMe by clicking here.  It will help coordinate activities amongst the Pack.

Scouts should wear their Class Bs (red t-shirts) on Saturday.

Directions to the Serpent Mound can be found here.
